If you have an AVCHD camcorder, you may be familiar with MTS/M2TS format, which is the specific container that used to save footage in. As for AVCHD, it was developed jointly by Sony and Panasonic in 2006, primarily for use in high definition consumer camcorders. Panasonic released the first professional AVCHD camcorder in autumn of 2008, followed by Sony in the first quarter of 2010. It has native support for MTS files, and your Mac need have a relatively high configuration, otherwise you may have issues like stuttered video, video/audio out of sync, etc. Supposing you are running a slower Mac, we suggest you to convert .mts to MOV, and use the QuickTime player to play the converted QuickTime files, by then you can expect a well playback performance.
Now we have no problems to play AVCHD mts/m2ts clips on a Mac, but how about editing mts videos in iMovie, FCP, FCE? We will take importing MTS files to iMovie’08 for instance. Some typical issues you may meet when loading AVCHD recordings to iMovie:
“One of my friends gave me some MTS files from his camera, I wanna import these MTS clips to iMovie’08 for editing, but iMovie didn’t accept them. I read somewhere people said I could copy the .m2ts or .mts files to an external firewire drive, and then iMovie 08 is able to detect the drive and open the import dialog for clip selection.
