Derived from MPEG-2, XDCAM is a professional recording format developed by Sony, but then also used by other manufacturers like JVC. XDCAM media comes inside a QuickTime MOV container, a MP4 file inside a BPAV structure, or in a .MXF file. AS we know, MXF footage is not compatibility with FCP 6/7/X. And the most suggested workaround is to transcode XDCAM MXF to Apple ProRes Codec that FCP prefers to.

I have shot some XDCAM MXF files with my Sony PMW-200. My biggest problem is not importing and viewing MXF file in FCP but preserving multiple audio tracks in raw MXF when converting XDCAM MXF to ProRes MOV. I tried some conversion program and I found there were only one track with output MOV, as well as some audio problems, such as no audio or audio cut off suddenly. Then my friend introduced Aunsoft TransMXF Pro for Mac and luckily, it did a pretty good job. More than converting MXF to MOV, MKV, and MP4 with multiple audio channels and mixing multiple audio channels into one for output, this excellent MXF to FCP converter can transcode MXF to various popular video formats if you don't care about multiple tracks.

Here is my experience on converting Sony XDCAM MXF to ProRes MOV with multiple audio tracks saved for FCP. Let's see TransMXF Pro for Mac how to works.

Step1: Import or drag & drop Sony PMW-100 XDCAM MXF

Connect Sony XDCAM camcorder to your Mac computer hard drive via USB cable
You can import MXF content via clicking “add video” or “add folder” in the upper corner or just drag MXF to the program directly.

In this step, you may encounter that the MXF with just video but no audio. A suggestion is to click "add folder" to load the entire XDCAM MXF whole structure folder to avoid of missing audio caused by metadata loss. And you'd better to preview the raw MXF before you transcode XDCAM to multiple audio tracks MOV.

If you want to merge MXF files into one file, just need to check the "Merge into one" box. Meanwhile you can split one big MXF file into several clips.

Step2: choose multiple audio tracks MOV as output format

Click the "format" and choose the "Multi-track Video -> Multi-track Apple ProPres 422 (*.mov)" files as the output format.

Step3: Set multi-task settings

This setting is only in the condition of choosing multi-track video. Click "settings" to preserve multiple audio tracks in original MXF. You have more choices, if you don’t want to keep all audio tracks, you can uncheck undesired ones. And it’s also okay for you to mix multi-audio tracks into individual track.

The system default like the video frame rate as 23.976fps or video size as 1920*1080 is to keep the best quality for editing in Final Cut Pro. You can reset them for specific needs.

You also can initial edit MXF file, like trim, crop, flip, add water mark or effect to the videos via a click on “editor tool” in the main interface.

Step4: Convert MXF files into multi-track ProRes MOV

Click "Start Conversion" icon, TransMXF Pro for Mac will convert MXF to multiple audio tracks MOV with high quality and perfect video/audio synchronization. After XDCAM MXF to ProRes Conversion, you will be able to get the output files via clicking on "Open" button and then import the converted videos to FCP.
