How to Convert AVCHD MTS to Mac Compatible Format?

What is AVCHD and MTS file? MTS format is a high-definition MPEG, AVC, H.264 transport stream video file format which commonly used by HD camcorders such as Sony, Canon, Panasonic.

MTS files are used primarily with Sony hardware. Camcorders make use of MTS in the form of AVCHD, a recording format made specifically for camcorders. Some camcorder models from Canon also use MTS files. These files are also present on Blu-ray disc compilations, therefore they are capable of storing quite a large amount of information and data tracks.

Here we only talk about the AVCHD file or MTS file from HD Camcorders since Blu-ray is encrypted and on iMac, Blu-ray drive is not commonly used.

How to get the proper MTS file or AVCHD file saved into iMac hard drive? Well, of course, you can copy them directly into. But, by this way, is it possible for you to pick out certain MTS files you want from piles of the shootings quickly and clearly? What about selecting specific 20 wanted files from several hundred files?

Some camcorder assistant apps, such as Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac, will provide a camcorder Wizard, which can help you easily preview and tick the MTS files in the list and get them backup or imported together. Generally such a job will be finished within 10 minutes if you are familiar with the shooting MTS files or AVCHD files.

After getting the MTS to Mac saved on iMac, what to do next? Play it? OK, what is the most proper player? If you are using a Windows PC, Windows Media Player V12 will smoothly play the MTS files or AVCHD files. What about on an iMac?

You will find that only VideoLan Player, or so-called VLC Media Player, of course by its Mac version, will be able to play the MTS files or AVCHD files on Mac. But you will notice one issue quickly: the file will not be played well. It will be jerky. During the playback, sometimes, it will pause for a second, and then go on. Even though you are using an Intel Core iMac, in the latest Mac OS Lion, the playback is still not good enough.

Maybe you will think about play what you shoot by converting the raw video, MTS files or AVCHD files, to other formats. But it is a pity that the quality of the video will be degraded a lot in this way and you will not be able to enjoy the HD quality any more. So, recoding the MTS files or AVCHD files to another format by a converter app, which is quite easy to Google out a lot, is not a smart choice.

So you still need Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac in this situation. It will help you rewrap your AVCHD files or MTS files into lossless MKV format. It is not a conversion process, but a rewrap! Or if you are using FCP X or iMovie on your iMac, Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac still can help you convert your AVCHD file or MTS file to those Mac compatible formats: ProRes 422 or AIC, Apple Intermediate Codec. You will be happy to find that the latest version of Aunsoft Final Mate for Mac supports 5.1 channel output for ProRes 422.
