Then, what’s MXF?
MXF, an abbreviation for Material Exchange Format, is a "container" or "wrapper" format which supports a number of different streams of coded “essence,” encoded with any of a variety of codecs, together with a metadata wrapper which describes the material contained within the MXF file.
Currently, there’re two basic MXF types: one is those where the essence (media) is stored in the same file as the metadata that refers to it. The other is that where the essence is stored in separate files to the metadata, while these files have External essence. Learn two basic MXF types, please enter:

Also, there comes the last but the most important question: how to edit HVX200 MXF in iMovie?
Since iMovie can’t natively support editing HVX200 MXF files. The clips captured from Panasonic AG-HVX200 must be converted to iMovie compatible formats before importing MXF to iMovie. “What’s the best friendly format for iMovie?” I guess you must have another question. iMovie’s native format is Apple Intermediate Codec (*.mov), so we’d better transcode MXF to AIC at first.
