Overview
A number of key differences aside, the Motorola DROID 2 is in more ways than not the DROID X trapped in a different body. Both devices tout the same speedy 1 GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and Motorola’s slightly modified version of Android’s standard interface. The DROID 2, however, rocks the latest update to Google’s Android operating system (Android 2.2 “Froyo”) right out of the box — although the X is expected to receive the same update in the coming months. Other key differences between the two powerful smartphones include display size, the presence of a physical QWERTY keyboard, storage space, and camera quality.
Key Differences
* Operating system: Both devices are powered by Google’s Android operating system. The DROID 2, however, is powered by Android 2.2 while the DROID X is powered by Android 2.1 (although the X will receive an update to Android 2.2 in the next number of months). Android 2.2 offers a faster user experience and a number of features including support for Adobe Flash 10.1.
* Display: Perhaps the most significant difference between the two devices lies in the realm of display size. The DROID X (4.3″ TFT display, 480×854 pixels) has a significantly larger display than that of the DROID 2 (3.7″ TFT display, 480×854 pixels). As far as display sizes go, the DROID X has among the biggest displays available on any smartphone on the market while the DROID 2 has a display size that lands in the middle of the spectrum. While the added display real estate will undoubtedly provide a great movie watching and web browsing experience, the X’s sizable display also means that the X is a significantly larger and less portable device than the DROID 2.
* Keyboard: While the DROID X offers a great virtual (on-screen) QWERTY keyboard, the DROID 2 provides a comfortable (and much-improved) slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard in addition to a virtual QWERTY. Users preferring a physical keyboard may be easily swayed into choosing the DROID 2.
* Storage Space: Right out of the box, the DROID X offers a total of 24GB of storage space (8GB on-board, pre-installed 16GB microSD card), while DROID 2 has a total of 16GB of storage space (8GB on-board, pre-installed 8GB microSD card). Both devices can support up to a 32GB microSD card.
* Camera: Both devices are equipped with great cameras with autofocus and on-board dual LED flashes. The DROID X has an 8-megapixel camera that is capable of recording video at 720P. The DROID 2 has a 5-megapixel camera, and while the device can still record great video, it is limited to DVD-quality video. The difference in megapixels really only comes into play when printing large images.
* Battery life: The DROID X and DROID 2 each boast relatively impressive battery life. The DROID 2, however, will outlast the DROID X slightly in both talk time and standby time.
