A few weeks ago, Sony promised to deliver more details on a camcorder with interchangeable lenses. Well, they have now delivered. You're looking at the NEX-VG10, an HD camcorder and the first Sony camcorder to use a large-sized HD CMOS sensor (when it comes to image sensors, larger is usually better) that the company claims is a full 19.5 times larger than a "standard" camcorder sensor.
The VG10 will use the E-mount lenses that Sony sells for its NEX line of interchangeable lens cameras (they will also sell an adapter that lets you attach larger A-mount lenses used in Sony's Alpha digital SLR cameras). This opens up a range of creative video taking options, just as interchangeable lenses give digital cameras more versatility for tackling different scenes or for achieving different photographic effects.
Here's a look at the VG10's key specs:
- 1920 x 1080i video recording in the AVCHD format (24Mbps)
- 14-megapixel still photos
- 3-inch LCD display
- an adjustable electronic viewfinder
- Quad Capsule Spatial Array stereo microphone
- direct to Memory Stick and SDHC/SDXC card recording
The VG10 ain't cheap. It will set you back $1,999 for a kit that includes an 18-200mm lens, the equivalent of an 11x optical zoom. It has optical image stabilization as well. Sony will also throw in a $99 voucher so you can purchase their Vegas Studio HD Platinum 10 video editing software.
We'll reserve judgment on the quality of the VG10 until it's been tested but the "idea" of the VG10, and the fact that Sony is continuing to invest in and innovate at the higher-end of the camcorder market, is certainly encouraging.
