The latest version of Apple Final Cut Pro X has updated to 10.0.4, which can be downloaded from Apple Store since April 2012. Improvements of the new version were listed as the following link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4589

In the Discussion Area of Apple Website, a thread talking about 1080 50/60p videos supported directly by the new version FCP is now discussed vehemently. It begins with a guy finding that the new version of FCP X could read his Sony A65 60p AVCHD files directly. After that, the following users tested more HD camcorders, such as Sony NEX 5N, Sony HDR-CX700V and so on, including Panasonic HDC-TM900. The testing result was the same: FCP X 10.0.4 could read these 1080 50/60p AVCHD files.

So, can all the AVCHD files in 1080 50/60p be supported by FCP X 10.0.4? The answer is absolutely not. Here is my test about how the new FCP X supports 1080 50/60p videos, my camcorders are TM700 and TM900. As the two camcorders have the completely same test result, I just use TM700 as the example.

When I connect the camcorder with my iMac via USB cable, FCP X couldn’t read the files either in the built-in Memory card or the SD card. (As you know, TM series have a Memory card and a SD card.) Then, I take the SD card out and insert it into iMac, the AVCHD files were imported into FCP X smoothly.

I don’t know how this happened. After then, I tested the files on the local disc. I transfer the whole AVCHD file structure from Memory Card to local disc first. Then I choose “Import from camera”, unfortunately the files won’t be recognized. (I should introduce that even when you import files in local disc, you still need to select “import from camera” in FCP X as there is intact file structure exists. “import files” only means importing single video clip into FCP X.) Back to my test, FCP X wouldn’t read files transferred from the Memory Card. After that, I copied file structure in the SD Card and transfer it to local disc. This time, files were imported into FCP X successfully.

the result (TM700 and TM900) shows as below

1st, the latest FCP X can’t read 1080 50/60p AVCHD files in the built-in Memory

2nd, the latest FCP X can’t read 1080 50/60p AVCHD files, which were copied from Memory to the Local disc.

3rd, the latest FCP X can’t read 1080 50/60p AVCHD files in the SD Card with TM700 connected to iMac via USB cable.

4th, the latest FCP X can’t read 1080 50/60p AVCHD files, which was copied from SD Card to the Local disc with TM700 connected to iMac via USB cable.

5th, the latest FCP X can read 1080 50/60p AVCHD files in the SD Card inserted into the iMac slot.

6th, the latest FCP X can read 1080 50/60p AVCHD files, which was copied from SD Card to iMac local disc with SD Card inserted into the slot.

7th, the Card Reader just works like the slot, so, the test result is the same as testing with the iMac slot.

I didn’t own the other model camcorders mentioned in the thread, so I didn’t have a chance to test. I am still confused about whether they could import the 1080 50/60p AVCHD files no matter from the built-in Memory or from the SD Card. Whenever I got the information, I’d share with everyone.
